Evaluations can feel abstract—or even intimidating—especially in large, international organisations. Yet when used well, they can unlock learning, sharpen programme design, and help teams make better decisions. That was the starting point for the online course we recently developed for the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The brief was clear: create a self-paced online course that demystifies evaluation and gives staff—from programme managers to field officers—a shared understanding of why it matters and how it works. The result was a seven-module course that balances practical insights with accessible learning design, making evaluation feel less like an administrative task and more like a tool for improvement and growth.

Moving from compliance to confidence

Instead of focusing only on methods and reporting requirements, we designed the course to show how evaluation can support everyday work. It includes practical modules on evaluation management, communicating findings, and turning recommendations into action. By linking concepts to real examples and case-based exercises, participants build confidence to take part in—and benefit from—evaluation processes.

Designed for everyone, everywhere

With IOM colleagues in over 100 countries, accessibility and inclusivity weren’t optional—they were essential. That’s why the course was built according to WCAG standards and uses diverse avatars, voiceovers from around the world, and examples from different contexts. The result? A learning space, available in English, French, and Spanish, where everyone feels represented and able to connect with the content.

A dynamic and self-paced experience

Learners move through 24 hours of modular content at their own rhythm, guided by short videos, quizzes, and migration-focused examples. Crucially, it blends online activities with real-life tasks — inviting learners to apply concepts in their own context and share reflections in community forums. This approach not only teaches the “how” of evaluation but embeds it in everyday thinking.

A tool for shared understanding

By turning evaluation into a shared practice rather than a specialist’s task, the course brings learning into the heart of the organization’s vision for adaptive, evidence-based programming. And it proves that with thoughtful design, online learning about Evaluation doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right tools and approach, it becomes part of how we learn, adapt, and make our work more meaningful.
