From NGO to Social Enterprise

To avoid being solely dependent on donors, non-profit organisations in recent years have been trying to find ways to survive and be sustainable by diversifying their revenue streams. One of the opportunities to become a more sustainable and independent organisation is to become a social enterprise by offering or selling value-added products and services in line with your organisation's mission so that the social impact and vision of the organisation are maintained. Social enterprises are identified by the OECD as “any private activity conducted in the public interest, organised with an entrepreneurial strategy, whose main purpose is not the maximisation of profit but the attainment of certain economic and social goals, and which has the capacity for bringing innovative solutions to the problems of social exclusion and unemployment.”

Training objectives:

  • Understand the meaning of "social enterprise" and how it differentiates from NGOs.
  • Understand what and how of a "social enterprise" such as: business models, market segmentation, and key partnerships.
  • Understand the steps of transforming from an NGO into a “social enterprise”.
