Project Cycle Management: Indicators

Indicators can be very powerful instruments for managers of development projects and programmes. The development and usage of indicators form an essential part in the management of development efforts. However, at all levels, organisations struggle to find appropriate and useful indicators, in order to avoid large and expensive data collecting systems. Moreover, phenomena very often appear too complex to be put into measurable  indicators. This course thoroughly deals with the functions and limitations of indicators and proposes ways to identify suitable indicators to the particular context.

Course Content

The programme shows how different types of indicators are linked to different needs of information in the project cycle. The first part of the course focuses on the planning indicators while the second part deals with monitoring indicators.

Training Method

The training method used is highly participatory. The trainers will propose theoretical tools and models for analysis which will be linked to day-to-day practice through practical exercises based on case material brought in by the client. Standard case material can also be provided by MDF.

During this process, the trainers will stimulate discussions and the exchange of practical experiences and know-how between participants.

Our participative and interactive method enables to:

  • take into account the participants' expectations
  • alternate theory and practice with group discussions
  • alternate group work with personal brainstorming
  • control the participants' interventions, foreseen at particular moments.
